WORK ON RAW CANVAS
Incorporating bark from the Australian paper bark tree (Melaleuca Quinquenevia) and sand from South Africa.
Australia’s Indigenous culture used paper bark for practical purposes (sleeping mats, bandages, cradles, shelters, wrapping food for cooking), for spiritual (funeral and other traditional ceremonies) as well as for medicinal purposes (Tea tree oil which has antibacterial and antifungal properties).
An awareness of the increasing intolerance of diverse thinking and beliefs as well as the loss of ancient links with the natural world has led to a series of works relating to our common humanity.
Focusing on our shared archaic past raises questions about our collective present and future.
